The three works by the renowned American video artist are installed in one of the most evocative places in Milan, the oldest underground church in the city. The descent into the crypt of the San Sepolcro helps the visitor to immerse him or herself both physically and mentally in the artist’s poetry. The 3 videos – The Quintet of the Silent, Earth Martyr and The Return – require patience and sensitivity from the observer but what they give back is priceless. Bill Viola is an artist who puts the spirituality of man, the values of different religions and the life-death and resurrection cycle at the heart of his work. Like Renaissance paintings in motion, his videos embrace these profound principles and transmit them in silence, slowly, but with a depth that few other living artists can express.
Treat yourself to half an hour in his company, you will not be disappointed.
