Together with her daughters Bianca and Maria Chiara, Clara Lavagetti Sforni, wife of the sadly and prematurely deceased collector Guido have generously donated the Guido Sforni Collection (1935 – 1975) to the FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano. This is a precious collection of works on paper by some of the most prominent Italian and foreign artists active in the first half of the last century including Henri Matisse, Pietro Marussig, Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Mario Sironi and Lucio Fontana.
The collection has since become part of the permanent collection at Villa Necchi Campiglio and makes a valuable contribution to enriching its history.
Entering into a harmonious dialogue with the Claudia Gian Ferrari Collection, housed in the villa since 2008, the new core of works has been set up in the so-called “Stanza del Principe” and the setting which best preserves the original design by Piero Portaluppi with furnishings, decorations and architectural details has been modified to accommodate the Guido Sforni Collection (1935 – 1975). Thanks to the essential support of Natixis, a major French banking group which has had close links with the FAI for many years, and the contribution of the Lombardy Region, the exhibition curated by Bianca Sforni has a new lighting design that is in keeping with the necessary conservative requirements.
The collection boasts a large charcoal piece by Mario Sironi, a dramatic Testa di Donna by the Trieste artist Piero Marussig, seven drawings by Pablo Picasso from the ample works associated with Les Déjeuners sur l’herbe, three important portraits by Henri Matisse, eight drawings by Amedeo Modigliani and a graphic piece by Lucio Fontana.
