There are still a few days left to see Caravaggio’s masterpiece I Musici at the Gallerie d’Italia – Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano in Naples. On July 24th the work will return to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to which in the meantime the Intesa Sanpaolo lent Il Martirio di Sant’Orsola, exhibited in New York as part of the exhibition entitled The Last Caravaggio.
The display of I Musici is not just a means to an end in itself, but an opportunity for the putting on of a day of multidisciplinary studies looking at the great artist. During the day the identity of the author of the text and music of the madrigal depicted in the Caravaggio masterpiece was revealed for the first time as the poet and humanist Jacopo Sannazaro, author of the sonnet used as a text for the madrigal set to music by the Neapolitan Pompeo Stabile. This discovery is the result of a long and challenging search that took the musicologist Domenico Antonio D’Alessandro over thirty years.
