Ai WeiWei strikes again. The subversive Chinese artist has plastered the columns of the Berlin Konzerthaus with about 14,000 lifejackets in order to raise public awareness about the issue of immigration.
The jackets, brought to the Gendarmenmarkt square from the island of Lesbos, have been used by the artist to expose the scandalous discovery that, although they are usually of poor quality, they are sold at a high price to migrants before beginning their desperate journey.
The columns of the neoclassical building also host a large poster with the hashtag #SafePassage, which is intended to be a call for the opening of humanitarian corridors, thus avoiding further carnage in the Mediterranean.
Due to the growing number of refugees who attempt the crossing, the artist started drawing international attention to the issue, sharing photos and videos of the Greek island on his own Instagram page. To emphasize his interest in dealing with this issue, he also announced the closing of his “Ruptures” exhibition in Copenhagen in protest against the approval by the Danish government of a series of laws that prevent asylum seekers from entering the country .
Thanks to Ai WeiWei, who shows us once again that art is not an end in itself.
